Overview

Are you suffering from a plateau in your Smash game? If so, your remedy may be found in the Plateau by Granola Arcade. This rectangle controller has plenty to offer you—despite having a compact size.

Of course, you can use the Plateau for platform fighters beyond Smash. Using it for games like Street Fighter and Tekken wouldn’t totally be out of the question either. In fact, this controller has modes for such fighting games.

Back to Smash though, and with 21 buttons, the Plateau has all you need to dominate in a match. Through Kailh Choc V2 Red switches that are linear with a 50 g actuation force (moderate to light), you can be sure that the 3D printed keycaps—with a textured finish—are responsive.

Truth be told, you may be wondering, “What if I’m not a fan of Kailh Choc V2 Reds?” No worries—because the Plateau’s switches are hot swappable without the need for tools or soldering. So, if you prefer other Kailh Choc V2 switches—or even V1 switches—feel free to go for them.

Thankfully, the Plateau comes with a non-slip silicone pad you can apply to the bottom for stability purposes. Because this pad requires DIY application, it also means you can apply another pad—or just skip it.

In any case, we at The Arcade Stick would recommend placing a controller with such a form factor on a desk for optimal play. On the bright side, the Plateau is portable and sized like a tablet. This way, you can conveniently take it to your buddy’s place for a sparring session.

The fact of the matter is the Plateau is printed from PLA Pro for rigidity and durability. The controller is a single piece, which means toolless disassembly and repairs. In other words, there is no need to buy extra tools.

When it comes to compatibility, the Plateau uses an RP2040 chip and runs on the Haybox firmware—both great choices. You even get easy access to BOOTSEL controls to customize the firmware as you wish.

By the way, the Plateau should be compatible with the Nintendo 64 as well. Note that you would probably have to buy a USB-C cable from Granola Arcade separately.

Hey, at least the cable is braided!

Now, it’s time to stack the Plateau’s performance with a beautiful look. Mix and match the controller’s colors as you please. We’re talking about the color of the enclosure and buttons.

For example, you can have a purple enclosure with a mix of purple, red, green, yellow, and gray buttons. There are dozens of colors to choose from, and with the Plateau: the possibilities are nearly endless.
