Introduction
The name of the SGF Alpha signifies a new beginning. You see, this redesigned stickless controller comes with buttons called SGF MonKeys. Understand that SGF Devices is an establishment with an ape-based theme.
Performance
The MonKeys allow you to choose your desired profile. Furthermore, they are smooth to press. That said, have you ever pressed keys that do not give you enough feedback to know whether or not you pressed them? The Alpha’s tactile switches solve this issue as you should know per press if you have successfully registered an input.
As for the function buttons, the Alpha has six of them. To deactivate the pause button and avoid accidentally pressing it during serious matches, simply use the tournament lock.
The Alpha is a bit more friendly on the lap compared to previous SGF Devices controllers, and that is due to its width. In the future, you can expect different button layouts to come out after the SGF apes put some more time in the lab. Current Alpha owners should be able to enjoy expansion kits down the line.
Hardware
You can enhance the Alpha’s compatibility by inserting a dongle into the EXT port. The same port can also support external L3 and R3 input sources, such as through a foot pedal. That’s right: a foot pedal! Otherwise, the USB-C to A cable is braided with a right angle shape, which can reduce obstruction for you.
As for the Alpha’s build itself, it is made of brushed aluminum with magnets holding it together, except for the interior, edges, and strap rings, which are made of durable nylon. The magnets pretty much make disassembling the controller a screwless endeavor and therefore an easier process for you.
Despite components like aluminum, the controller remains impressively light, making it easy for you to carry around. Speaking of carrying, the cherry on top is the carrying case that comes with your brand new Alpha.
Appearance
The nylon’s satin finish is smooth but not glossy, and it is textured but not rough. Each button of the Alpha sits in a LED backlit enclosure with a raised bevel around the button for halo lighting. The custom RGB LED options (and responsive inputs) are made possible by the critically acclaimed GP2040-CE firmware.
One of the many things that SGF Devices does uniquely is how, instead of custom art being slid under an acrylic panel, your art of choice can be printed directly onto the Alpha.
If you would like custom art for your Alpha, hit us up here at The Arcade Stick. The fact of the matter is we are partners with SGF Devices, so if you are ready to make your Alpha reflect your taste in life, give us a holler!
