Introduction

The Keybox Maverick is a handmade controller that is inspired by the SNES controller. Its directional keys allow it to double as a WASD controller as well. There are buttons for attacks on the right, and two rows of function buttons can be found nearby.

Performance

The Kailh Choc V2 switches of the Maverick are hot swappable, and the switch colors include:

  • Blue
  • Brown
  • Red

Let us do a quick dive into what to expect from each switch color, but first, let us describe the Kailh Choc V2 in general. This switch is low profile with a shorter travel distance than your traditional switch.

As for the blue variant, it is tacticle and clicky, so prepare for a noticeable sound & bump similar to typing on a keyboard. Go for the brown variant, and you can pretty much get rid of the click. The result is a subtle bump, giving you some auditory feedback—without waking up the neighbors.

As for the Kailh Choc Red, it can be described as linear and smooth. With this red variant, forget about the bump, and forget about the click. We’re talking fast, uninterrupted strokes.

Hardware

Handmade with care, the Maverick runs on the open source GP2040-CE firmware. Through a third party adapter, you can extend the compatibility of the controller to be compatible with more consoles. In any case, be sure to have a USB-C cable ready to enjoy playing with the controller as soon as you get it.

Appearance

Remember how you can choose the Maverick’s switch colors? Well, even the keycaps and the case itself can have different colors.

For example, your Maverick can have a light gray case with magenta keys and mint keycaps. You can mix things up even further, featuring more than three colors.

In other words, you can make your brand new Maverick as close to or as far away from the SNES vibe as you want. The quintessence of customization!

In essence, what the Maverick offers you is a dual layout packed within a small controller that you can customize the colors and compatibility of. If that is what you need, do not hesitate to add this controller to your arsenal.

Conclusion

The Maverick ticks many boxes, such as staying true to the source material—as well as high performance elements.

  • SNES vibe
  • Dual layout
  • Swappable switches
  • Switch options
  • Color options
  • Excellent firmware
  • Extendable compatibility
