Overview

Shoebill Gaming is the type of Booth store that offers both old school and new school controllers—with the Cypress being the old school kind.

This BOOTH store is based in Japan, but if you pick the Buyee option during checkout, you can have a Cypress shipped to you internationally.

With that being said, your Cypress should arrive with a manual as well as a USB-B cable. It’s tough to understand why Togo-san of Shoebill Gaming chose to include a USB-B cable instead of USB-C, but we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt—maybe he knows something we don’t.

Moving on!

The Cypress has 15 main buttons, and its three function buttons can be found in the back. All the buttons are 24 mm Sanwa buttons, well, except for the Sanwa jump button, which is 30 mm (so you can press it more easily with your thumb’s side).

It’s at this point important to note that Shoebill Gaming accepts custom layout requests. This includes ordering a variant with a joystick.

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room…

Why is this controller called the Cypress? Is it because of Cypress, California? What about the rap group, Cypress Hill? Truth be told, it’s because the Cypress is made of a wood grain called cypress. From now on, we’re going to go back & forth between saying Cypress and cypress, so take heed! Here’s a basic guide:

  • Cypress with a capital C = the controller
  • Lowercase cypress = the wood

That said, the Cypress is held together by only four screws, requiring little unscrewing time if needed. Not only that, the controller makes use of a Raspberry Pi Pico chip to run on the low latency GP2040-CE firmware.

One feature of that firmware is SOCD cleaning, such as simultaneously pressing up and down (or left and right) resulting in a neutral input. By the way, a USB passthrough can be found in the Cypress’ center back.

Stylistically, cypress has a fine grain with a warm texture, and the Cypress is available in three colors:

  1. Natural
  2. Ebony
  3. Teak/blush

The natural color celebrates the Cypress wood’s purity, ebony has a bit of a modern edge to it, and teak (or blush) radiates elegance. In any case, all colors are finished with a urethane varnish that combines low odor with durability.

Another way you can make your Cypress look more aesthetic than a general anesthetic is by having one side of the buttons exhibit one color, and the other side exhibit another color.

Don’t want your entire Cypress looking all wooden? No problem, reach out to us here at The Arcade Stick, and we can hook you up with our custom art service so your controller can also feature art that represents you—adding some nuance to the wooden structure as well.
