FightBox R8

Introduction

“Get over here,” said Scorpion often while giving his opponent a whooping over the decades. Actually, maybe he’s just trying to get you over here to take a look at the FightBox R8-J!

What’s cool about the R8-J is that it brings back the Klassic layout, but this time, you get to enjoy premium Sanwa parts. Not just that, it’s got function buttons like:

  • L2
  • Select
  • Home
  • Start
  • R1

Enough beating around the bush, though… Let’s get into the nitty gritty of the R8-J.

Performance

With the R8-J, FightBoxArcade’s aim was to revive the PDP Mortal Kombat Klassic Fight Stick’s layout—this time with Sanwa parts.

Essentially, the R8-J’s Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT joystick is clicky yet flexible & responsive, whereas the Sanwa OBSF-30 buttons have an optimal travel distance and sound crisp.

Beyond that, the R8-J’s star feature is its block button being in the dead center (since you’ll be holding it a lot). That way, you don’t miss out on the benefit of using a regular pad.

To put things simply, the R8-J’s six button layout is like so:

Button PositionButton Role
LeftHigh/low punches
RightHigh/low kicks
CenterBlock
Bottom leftRun

Hardware

The R8-J is kind of a three-in-one deal comprised of:

  1. Metal
  2. Acrylic
  3. Rubber

More specifically, the enclosure is metallic, the top is acrylic, and the bottom has six rubber feet that keep the R8-J in place as you unleash some insane Kombos. There’s a wrist slope for your comfort as well. Having said that, this fightstick is on the heavier side.

Better yet, it’s pretty neat that FightBoxArcade gives you different compatibility options based on your requirements (and purchasing power).

On the upper end, there’s the Brook Gen-5X PCB with diverse compatibility, and there’s the Gen-5 with a little less compatibility. On the flip side, there’s the FightBox GP2040-CE Advanced Breakout Board, which is still low in latency, and it runs on open source firmware that’s updatable online. Whichever option you choose, just connect your R8-J using its USB-B port, and you can enjoy hours of MK fun!

Appearance

The R8-J’s joystick and button colors are pretty rad—not gonna lie—and because this fightstick has acrylic on top, you can customize its art.

We at The Arcade Stick would be delighted to customize your R8-J’s art! In fact, here’s a sample by our artist Felipe Fernandez for his client’s FightBox:

(You might have some R8-J digital art already, which we can just print for you.)

Conclusion

The R8-J is a way for nostalgic MK players to enjoy the Klassic layout with Sanwa parts. It’s also a way for new players to experience the past—but with Sanwa parts.

  • Klassic layout
  • Sanwa parts
  • Wrist slope
  • Six rubber feet
  • Customizable art
  • Diverse compatibility
  • Metallic-acrylic Kombo
