Overview

Somewhere in New York, there’s a guy making some of the most beautiful arcade controllers you have ever seen. They’re so beautiful that you’d think they’re being mass produced by some giga factory in Silicon Valley. The truth is the Arcade Stick Project is run by one man only: BurnerAzR!

Take the ASP 16, for example. It can come in lever or leverless layouts. It also has a spacious interior for easier wire management. That said, let’s visualize a sample build you can go for…

Let’s start with a Sanwa JLF joystick, which moves flexibly and springs back to neutral smoothly whenever you let go of it after an input. Then, you can have a dozen Qanba Gravity buttons for some crisp, tactile feedback.

The ASP 16’s joystick and buttons can be in the Vewlix extended layout popularized by arcade cabinets like the Street Fighter IV ones from back in the dizzay. And the six function buttons? They’re 12 mm—a good size because:

  1. They’re big enough to press comfortably.
  2. They’re too small to press accidentally.

Moving on, you can use something like the Raspberry Pi Pico board to run on the open source GP2040-CE firmware. This firmware is updateable online, has decent compatibility options, and is practically lag free. It also powers up a 1.3″ OLED screen you can have in the upper center of the top panel, showing you things like:

  • Your button presses in real time
  • Which input mode you are in
  • Which directional mode you are in
  • Which SOCD cleaning mode you are in

Also, the USB cable can conveniently go into the ASP 16’s back center. Oh, and six screws hold the controller together, so there’s not much unscrewing you’d need to do whenever you want to disassemble the controller for some modding.

In addition to different button and enclosure color options (including a see-through option), you can add your own custom art. We at The Arcade Stick actually offer a custom art service to speed up the process for you.

So, are you in the market for a custom controller? If you’d like to create the controller of your dreams, reach out to the Arcade Stick Project.

Your controller can be as custom as you want, such as going for a 12″ enclosure (the ASP 12) instead of a 16″ one. There’s even a mini edition called the ASP 10QT. With the Arcade Stick Project, you are spoiled for choice!
