Introduction
Are you tired of waiting for the FlexStrike to release? Would you rather buy it in a leverless layout too? This is what the Vilcorn Y03 is for. It looks like the FlexStrike and has a leverless layout as well. Not only that, it can be wired or wireless, depending on your preference.
Unboxing
The Y03 comes with:
- Manual
- USB-C cable
- PS5 receiver
PS5 receiver? What’s that? Basically, you can insert the PS5 receiver into the Y03’s USB-A port in order to make it compatible with the PS5.
What’s puzzling, however, is how the Y03 doesn’t come with a 2.4G receiver despite its wireless connection being part of its core identity. So, you’re stuck with Bluetooth unless you buy a 2.4G receiver.
On the bright side, it’s impressive how detailed the Y03’s manual is. At the time of this writing, you can also find a PDF copy of the manual on Vilcorn’s AliExpress listing in these languages:
- English
- Chinese
- Japanese
Performance
The Y03 is a 15 button controller with a split layout to give your hands and fingers more breathing space. Standard leverless controllers have 12 buttons, so this controller has three extra buttons you can press with your:
- Right thumb
- Left thumb
- Left middle finger
You can use your left middle finger to press the W button of the WASD button cluster. Moreover, the Y03’s attack button cluster is in the optimal Noir layout. In addition, the attack button cluster is on a panel that’s more raised and more sloped than the directional button cluster.
The Y03’s main buttons are 26 mm. For your reference, 24 mm buttons are considered on the smaller end, whereas 30 mm buttons are considered on the bigger end.
That said, the Y03’s buttons should last you up to five million presses. They’re infused with these linear optical switches that are red in color. These switches operate by light instead of mechanically. If you’re a fan of switches with short travel, you should like these switches.
You can describe the switches’ sound as moderate. Don’t expect to easily be able to mod these switches, however, as they may be soldered directly onto the Y03.
Moving on, here are the Y03’s function buttons:
- Touchpad
- Select
- Start
- Turbo
- Settings
- Light
- Home
Aside from the big touchpad, the Y03’s function buttons are like little rounded rectangles with more surface area than your typical nubs.
Hardware
The Y03 is made of light plastic. Furthermore, it’s wide enough to place on your lap while you grind your way to 2,000+ MR online. For grip, there are three rubber strips at the bottom. Two rubber strips should line up with your legs, whereas one rubber strip goes down the middle in a way that’s more suited for desk play.
Most importantly, the Y03 is an optionally wireless controller by way of 2.4G or Bluetooth for up to eight meters. Its battery is 800 mAh and should last you more than 20 hours per charge.
Otherwise, you can just plug in your Y03 using its included USB-C cable. The USB-C port is in the center back. This is also where you can charge the controller. As for the USB-A port, which is an EXT port, it’s on the left. Here, you can insert accessories like the included PS5 receiver.
Full disclosure…
The Y03’s compatibility can feel finicky, so please refer to its manual to understand how to connect it to your desired console. For example, you may need an Xbox controller to connect to the Xbox. Also, try to see if your favorite fighting game is compatible with this controller first.
By the way, have you noticed the toggle in the Y03’s back? Let’s spell out what this toggle’s labels mean:
| Toggle | Mode |
|---|---|
| H | HID |
| S | Switch |
| X | XInput |
| P | PlayStation |
| 2.4G | Wireless |
Appearance
While 15 button controllers are plenty, what sets the Y03 apart is that it looks like the FlexStrike. It’s got that yin and yang look where it’s half black, half white. Meanwhile, all the main buttons are white.
Conclusion
The Y03 isn’t just a FlexStrike replica. It’s light, slim, wide, wireless, and multiplatform with a 15-button split layout.
