Smash Edition
Introduction
Whether you’re a tournament organizer or competitive player, you may appreciate how small the Pico Pad is. It’s good to test games on the go. If at a Smash tournament specifically, you can instead go for the Pico Pivot.
Performance
With the legendary Noir layout, the Pico Pad has:
- D-pad on the top panel
- Eight attack buttons on the top panel
- Two function buttons on the top panel
- Three function buttons on the bottom panel
The Pico Pad’s top function buttons are smaller than the attack buttons. They’re for home and start. Meanwhile, the bottom function buttons are for R3, touchpad, and L3.
All of the above inputs use SMD tactile switches. Get ready for some clicky switches that are good for a thin controller like the Pico Pad. They have a bump midway, and they can withstand from dust to moisture.
Hardware
Lightweight and about the size of a credit card, the Pico Pad’s chassis is probably by Bloojay of UMS Ultra fame. This is a USB-C controller with a port in its center back, and here is its extended—but not full—compatibility list:
- Nintendo Switch 2
- Raspberry Pi
- Android
- Linux
- iOS
- Mac
- PC
The above compatibility is made possible due to the GP2040-CE firmware that’s open source, low latency, and widely adopted. That said, you should be able to extend your Pico Pad’s compatibility by way of a third party dongle.
Appearance
Rectangle Corner went to great lengths to let you customize your Pico Pad’s looks. You can choose the colors of its chassis and buttons using this fine establishment’s sleek customizer webpage. Look at how granular the color customization gets:
- D-pad
- Top buttons
- Top panel
- Bottom buttons
- Bottom panel
Note that the top panel’s color would also serve as accents that surround most of the bottom panel’s edges. Other than that, the controller has a lanyard charm loop for added style. Which charm will you be adding to your Pico Pad?
Conclusion
While the Pico Pad could’ve just been an unassuming little controller for tournament organizers, Rectangle Corner actually made sure to use quality switches and firmware. Plus, the color customization is in a league of its own. So, slide this bad boy into your pocket, and scour the globe in pursuit of tournament wins!
