FightBox R10-Twin

Introduction

Even though the Olsen twins might be the most famous American twins, the FightBox R10-Twin-American is no slouch either. It’s got two American joysticks and four American buttons, resulting in an all-American experience when playing retro games! Of course, nationals of other countries can enjoy this seminal controller too.

Unboxing

Your brand new R10-Twin-American should arrive in FightBoxArcade’s iconic blue and orange box with a detachable USB-B cable in it.

Performance

In twin-stick games like Robotron: 2084, the R10-Twin-American allows you to spin, strafe, or volley using its two joysticks. In fact, most twin-stick games use the left joystick for movement and right joystick to fire.

The R10-Twin-American’s Happ Competition Style joysticks are aided by Happ concave buttons. The bat-top joysticks have a heavy spring tension and long throw, whereas the buttons feel 50% heavier than Sanwas, for example.

Thankfully, the R10-Twin-American’s joysticks and buttons use a Cherry D44X microswitch with 75 gf operating force. Not only that, it can last you millions of cycles.

That said, we did want to briefly let you know that the R10-Twin-American’s function buttons are for:

  • L1
  • Select
  • Home
  • Start
  • R1
  • TP

Other than that, we did want to mention the R10-Twin-American’s side buttons, which are of the Baolian brand. In essence, these Baolian buttons are Sanwa-like but stiffer and with a longer travel distance. They’re swappable with Sanwas, but here’s the kicker: you might actually appreciate how they’re stiffer, well, depending on the game you play.

Hardware

The R10-Twin-American is a metallic controller with an acrylic panel. It’s big, and its weight is noticeable. Let’s also establish that this controller has four bottom feet to keep it stable while you play your favorite arena shooter.

Moving along, you can find a USB-B port in the R10-Twin-American’s back center. Speaking of connectivity, this controller operates on the open source GP2040-CE firmware, partially due to its reliance on the Advanced Breakout Board and Zero Delay Arcade Joystick Controller Board (based on the popular Raspberry Pi Pico). The controller is compatible with more than just the Nintendo Switch 2, PC, and Android, by the way.

Appearance

What’s the R10-Twin-American like visually? It’s got black joysticks with black function buttons and red main buttons. Its acrylic panel’s geometric art is cool as heck—and complements the black case nicely—yet you can still customize the art by way of an art service like the one we’ve been offering for years here at The Arcade Stick.

For instance, our artist Carlos Martinez designed art for a FightBox before and can be of service to you too:

(Have some digital art for your R10-Twin-American already and just need a print? We can print it for you!)

Conclusion

The R10-Twin-American is one of the best—and most fun—ways to play OG twin-stick games with modern hardware.

  • Nostalgic Happ parts
  • Cherry microswitch
  • Excellent firmware
  • Customizable art
  • Four bottom feet
  • Baolian side buttons
