Introduction
It’s 2009. Your copy of Street Fighter IV just arrived, and you ordered a Mad Catz Tournament Edition (TE) fightstick to go with it. Then again, you don’t need to time travel all the way back to 2009 just to pick up a brand new TE… Instead, you can order Ultra Arcade’s replica! It’s available in these formats:
- Leverless
- Keyboard
- Arcade stick
- Dual directional
The TE’s arcade stick and dual directional formats are available with a Japanese or Korean joystick. As for the joystick gate, it can be octagonal, square, or round.
Regarding the TE’s keyboard format, it can have a mixture of keys and buttons—or all keys. The keys utilize Cherry MX Speed Silver linear switches that are super fast yet smooth.
Performance
It’s hard to deny that the TE’s main appeal is its Sanwa parts. Namely, it can have a Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT joystick and/or Sanwa OBSF buttons in the Vewlix layout. Astro City and American layouts are also available.
The aforementioned Sanwa parts are responsive and with a satisfying sound. The buttons in particular have an optimal travel distance.
In the TE’s back right, you can find four fully sized auxiliary buttons that you can map to whatever you like. Why? It’s because the controller runs on the excellent GP2040-CE firmware that’s open source and updateable—with low latency.
That said, the TE has a sloped palm rest for your comfort. If you’d like to play with the controller on your desk, there are anti-slipping feet for that. If you’d instead like to play with it on your lap, it’s wide enough for comfortable placement.
Hardware
The TE has a moderate size and weight. Thankfully, its iconic USB cable storage compartment makes a comeback, and it can be found in the back left.
Furthermore, this TE has passthrough support—to upgrade the controller’s compatibility and support additional modern consoles—though this would require a compatible controller. On the bright side, Ultra Arcade allows you to order the controller with PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X fighting game compatibility.
Appearance
Your TE’s enclosure can be black, white, or have a black center with white sides. Moreover, you can go wild with the joystick and/or button colors.
In addition, you can opt for image or text laser engravement, and you can also opt for custom art. In fact, we at The Arcade Stick can help you with that through our service.
For example, we hope you enjoy this Ultra Arcade art that our illustrator Gilbert Han put together for his client (and he can illustrate art for your TE as well):
