Introduction

Drake once rapped, “I just want to be successful.” Meanwhile, the Card by Shoebill Gaming wants to be:

  1. Compact leverless controller
  2. With keyboard keycaps

If you’re used to playing with a keyboard but want a controller that’s more optimized for fighting games (as well as travel), you should consider the Card.

Unboxing

The Card’s box contents are simple this time around:

  • USB cable
  • Manual

Performance

The Card’s keys are around 7 mm tall, whereas the rubber feet are around 4 mm tall. The keys can use Kailh Choc V2 Red switches or Kailh Purple Iris switches.

Kailh Choc V2 Red switches are low profile. They provide you a smoothly linear keystroke for rapid, resistance-free actuation. On the other hand, Kailh Purple Iris switches are of the quieter kind.

Moving on…

The left, down, and right keys are slanted for your wrist’s comfort. The attack keys are slanted too. If you want, you can order the Card with two thumb keys instead of a mini spacebar.

Picture it like this… A mini spacebar gives your thumb more pressing space. However, a second thumb key can be useful if mapped to something like Drive Impact as a Street Fighter 6 player.

Otherwise, the Card’s five function buttons, which are the “pin” type, are for:

  1. Left stick
  2. Right stick
  3. Guide
  4. Back
  5. Start

Hardware

The Card is an A5-sized controller (a bit wider than a PlayStation controller) with this trifecta:

  1. Compact
  2. Slim
  3. Light

Although the Card is held together by a good number of screws (four screws), be sure not to expose the controller to any strong impacts or forces because there’s a risk of damaging it.

Operationally, the Card runs on the reliable Raspberry Pi Pico MCU and acclaimed GP2040-CE firmware. Moreover, this controller was tested on:

  • Nintendo Switch 2
  • Nintendo Switch
  • PC

Appearance

You can choose from two wood grains for your Card:

  1. White oak (lighter grain)
  2. Walnut (darker grain)

That said, keep in mind that the wood grain’s direction—plus the substrate’s color (black or blue)—might differ. As for the Card’s Japanese pattern, it’s called washi zukuri.

One pet peeve is that your Card may arrive with what looks like an upside-down Raspberry Pi Pico MCU that’s visible from the top panel.

Though, the Raspberry Pi Pico MCU’s orientation shouldn’t affect your Card’s performance and should strictly be visual. It’s probably oriented that way so that the USB port becomes located on the left.

To hide that potentially upside-down Raspberry Pi Pico MCU, another option for your Card would be custom art through our custom art service. Instead of a “woody” look, you can have the controller show off your favorite characters (or some other idea you might have).

Conclusion

The Card is a dream come true for keyboard players who travel a lot. Not only does it have slanted left, down, and right keys for your wrist’s comfort, it has slanted attack keys too.

More than that, the jump key being a mini spacebar gives you plenty of surface area for easier presses with your thumb’s side. Of course, you can order the Card with two thumb keys instead.

  • Comfortably slanted all-key layout
  • Mini spacebar or two thumb keys
  • Kailh Choc or Purple Iris switches
  • Compact, slim, light
  • Rubber feet
  • Light or dark wood
  • Custom art option
  • GP2040-CE firmware
  • Visually upside-down MCU
