Introduction
If it wasn’t for what happened in the year 2009, our site The Arcade Stick would possibly not be around. Thanks to the release of Street Fighter IV on consoles, 2009 revived the world’s interest in fighting games—including The Arcade Stick cofounder’s interest—and bestselling arcade stick companies like Qanba emerged.
This is where the Qanba 2009 comes in.
Although revealed at Evo 2023 and released in 2024, the Qanba 2009’s name pays homage to that unforgettable year, and this is an arcade stick that was designed to be bundled with a base that turns it into a Japanese arcade cabinet of sorts—without a screen.
You can just hook up your TV to the Qanba 2009, and you’re good to go—regardless of whether you’re a console or PC player. Also, whether you get the 2009-1P or 2009-2P version is entirely up to you.
Essentially, the 1P version is for one player, and the 2P version is for two players. Since our site specializes in single player arcade sticks, we’ll be focusing more on the Qanba 2009-1P.
Performance
The Qanba 2009 uses Qanba’s own silent parts: a Gravity joystick with Gravity KS buttons. The joystick is precise, smooth, and effortless. As for the buttons, they’re satisfyingly responsive.
If you happen to prefer other parts, the Qanba 2009 fortunately has the needed mounting brackets to be compatible with most joysticks and buttons.
Whichever joysticks and buttons you end up choosing, the Qanba 2009 features an ergonomic wrist slope reminiscent of Vewlix arcade cabinets.
You may be glad to know that the Qanba 2009’s eight main buttons are numbered from 1 to 8 instead of limiting you to PlayStation or Xbox buttons labels.
As for the Qanba 2009’s function buttons, they are for:
- Start
- Home
- Select
- Turbo
- 9
- 10
- Click
By the way, the start button is bigger than the rest. Otherwise, the Qanba 2009 has a tournament mode switch to disable the function buttons when you don’t need them.
If you were wondering, the 9 button serves as a left stick, and the 10 button—the right stick. There’s also a DP/LS/RS toggle to cycle between D-pad, left stick, and right stick inputs.
That said, you can plug the Qanba 2009 into up to four devices and switch freely between them with just one button press (A, B, C, or D). For example, you can assign your PC to the A button and three more consoles to B, C, and D.
To close out the performance review, you may like how you have the option to access DIP switch settings and relieve yourself from needing software to adjust the Qanba 2009.
Hardware
The Qanba 2009’s hardware can be conceptually divided into:
- Arcade stick
- Space for a mouse and keyboard
- Easy-to-assemble fully metal base
The Qanba 2009’s optional base has a spacious bottom shelf in the middle—as well as storage baskets on the sides (with a total of two baskets). For instance, you can put a PC, console, and more on the shelf. As for the baskets, they can hold your controllers—or even your energy drinks. Gotta be caffeinated to the gills when gaming, right? ☕
Because the Qanba 2009’s main board is modular, you can easily install the latest and fastest joystick PCBs. The swapping should take you no more than five minutes. PCBs that range from Brook to those that run on the excellent and open source GP2040-CE firmware are compatible.
Need to access the spacious and organized interior of your Qanba 2009? Due to its hinge, the arcade stick features a flap design that allows you to open it up almost like a briefcase, and the panel near it comes off completely.
You can also attach M8 threaded casters (wheels) to the base so you can move the Qanba 2009 around more easily. Impressively, the base doesn’t wobble.
By the way, if you grab a couple of Qanba 2009s and place them back to back, they would fit together nicely. This is regardless of whether you grab the 1P or 2P versions.
Now, if you grab just one unit of the Qanba 2009-2P and sit side by side with your sparring partner, there would be plenty of space for both of y’all—even if y’all are some heavy set dudes.
Appearance
Coated in black to match with most rooms, the Qanba 2009 brings back what you liked about classic arcade cabinets—with a freshly modern look that shouldn’t make your home look dated.
Branding-wise, on the top panel’s left is “QANBA” text, and on the right is the iconic Qanba joystick & buttons logo—plus “2009”. The top panel impressively retains its shine over time and is easy to clean if sweat ever accumulates as you use this glorious arcade stick to rank up online.
Conclusion
The Qanba 2009 is the king of options: it allows you to buy it as a standalone arcade stick or with a base. You can also buy its 1P or 2P version.
