Introduction
The Punk Workshop PE can be called the PWS PE for short. Its primary feature is its ultra-fast photoelectric switches, which are optical switches. Not only that, Punk Workshop claims that this is its slimmest and lightest controller yet.
Unboxing
Here’s what you can expect to come with your new PWS PE:
- Couple of anti-slip pads
- Torx L-key (T10)
- Torx L-key (T9)
- USB-C cable
Performance
When considering buying the PWS PE, you have to pay attention to its 15 button layout. This means that it has three more buttons than the classic 12 button layout. This also means that you can use these fingers to press the three extra buttons:
- Left thumb
- Right thumb
- Right index
Do you feel like such a button layout is conducive to performing well in the fighting games you like? Ponder that deeply. Otherwise, let’s learn more about the PWS PE’s switches, which have linear switching characteristics:
- 30 cN actuation force
- 0.5 mm actuation point
- 1.2 mm total travel
Moving on, you do have to know that the PWS PE has a sloped panel. This has been all the rage recently. Such a slope may allow you to play more comfortably and for longer hours.
Now, let’s close out this section by going through what the PWS PE’s four function keys do:

Hardware
OK, so we’ve established that Punk Workshop calls the PWS PE its slimmest and lightest controller yet. Let’s understand the hardware makeup more by going from top to bottom:
- Swappable buttons
- Swappable switches
- Clear acrylic panel
- Swappable art insert
- Main PCB
- Base housing
Other than what’s above, what’s nice about the anti-slip pads at the PWS PE’s bottom is that there is one pad per leg of yours. That said, be sure to find the USB-C port in the back center. As we hinted earlier, it’s your choice if you’d like to buy the PlayStation 5 or PC edition of this controller.
Appearance
The PWS PE looks so much like the PWS R14 that we absolutely have to show you this art that our designer Carlos Martinez made for it (and this is art that we also printed, by the way):
Yet, the PWS PE still looks different from the PWS R14, namely in the way that the corners’ slant looks more pronounced now.
In case you were wondering, the PWS PE’s cable and anti-slip pads are black. You have to keep this in mind because, as you probably already know, you can buy this controller in a black or custom art edition.
Conclusion
The PWS PE is a feature-heavy powerhouse, so to reduce the confusion for you about whether or not to buy this controller: you should highly consider it if you expect your fighting game skills to increase through a controller that has a 15 button layout infused with ultra-fast photoelectric switches.
