Overview
Centurion is a word that may bring back nightmares about that one move by Nova in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but no—it’s also the name of a DIY enclosure by Praetorian Printing!
You see, the Praetorian Centurion is one of the widest fightstick enclosures in the world. In fact, it’s reminiscent of the Hori VLX, which is a good thing. One reason is because the VLX and similar fightsticks allow you to set them on your lap without needing to squeeze your legs together tightly.
Speaking of the VLX, the Centurion features 30 mm buttons in a Vewlix layout—one of the most popular layouts back in the day (and still popular). Also, four function buttonholes can be found in the back right. At 24 mm, these function buttonholes are fairly big, which is rare.
The Centurion’s back, specifically the center back, is where you can also find the USB port hole. For compatibility purposes, Praetorian Printing provides you integral mounting points for a PCB. See if you can install a Brook board to maximize your compatibility options.
Structurally, the Centurion is made of PLA—known for being lightweight. Here is a breakdown of the hardware parts, starting with the enclosure body:
- Center
- Left
- Right
Moving on: the Centurion’s enclosure deck is dual-layered, tilted at a 2.5° for your comfort, and allows for the seamless mounting for a Sanwa JLF joystick (or something similar). Here is the enclosure deck’s breakdown:
- Center top
- Center backer
- Left top
- Left backer
- Right top
- Right backer
Finally, a sliding cable compartment can be found on the left. Oh, and 16 countersunk M4 screws are needed to keep everything nice & secure. With that being said, don’t be intimidated by the hardware lineup. Once your Centurion arrives, everything should be crystal clear.
Looks-wise, the Centurion may remind you of the bestselling Qanba Obsidian 2, and that’s because this fightstick is actually a spinoff from it—but the fightstick still looks distinguished enough. That said, you might have noticed that only six screws hold the top panel in place.
What does that mean?
That means you can quickly unscrew the Centurion’s top panel to then place your own custom art, which we at The Arcade Stick can provide you through our years-old art service. For example, check out the art of our illustrator Javier Machin for the similar Obsidian 2:
By the way, you can grab the Centurion in the five following colors:
- Black
- White
- Red
- Nebula (gray with a blue tone)
- Galaxy (gray with a purple tone)
(You can also mix & match the Centurion’s joystick and button colors to come up with a nice color scheme.)
Fundamentally, the Centurion is a DIY enthusiast’s dream come true. In fact, Paul from Praetorian Printing is even willing to entertain any custom layout requests you might have.
Just head on over to Praetorian Printing’s Etsy yourself and check out the impressive feedback that is a sign of Paul’s emphasis on customer satisfaction—maybe grabbing yourself a Centurion in the process!
