Overview
“Started from the bottom—now we’re here” are the wise words of Drake, and these words also describe Raw Super Arcade’s ascent from initially offering a mini resin fightstick (that honestly wasn’t the best looking) to now the Caster Portable, which does something that the fightstick industry has often considered to be impossible.
That impossible thing is how the Caster Portable is compatible with a Korean-inspired joystick despite having a slim case. More than that, there’s an optional analog stick, signaling that this arcade stick is more than a fighting game controller. In fact, it allows you to enjoy genres from retro arcade games to modern platformers.
That said, your Caster Portable should arrive with both a 3D printed bat-top and ball-top. You see, this arcade stick’s ultra low-profile digital joystick utilizes clicky switches, providing you a short throw and fast inputs. The joystick features the following five parts commonly associated with state-of-the-art joysticks:
- Shaft
- Pivot
- Spring
- Gate
- Enclosure
For reliability & durability, the Caster Portable’s four-axis shaft and square gate are made of CNC aluminum, but what about the buttons?
The Caster Portable’s PCB supports big, mappable buttons that range in size from 12 to 15 mm. These resin buttons’ switches are swappable if you want.
Regarding the Caster Portable’s menu buttons, they’re placed on the side to prevent you from accidentally pressing them. If you’re at a tournament, you can just make use of the tournament lock to disable the menu buttons altogether.
Now that we’ve spoken about the joystick and buttons, let’s briefly gloss over the Caster Portable’s most exciting design element: its optional analog stick.
Essentially, the Caster Portable’s analog stick comes mapped to LS (left stick) in a way that’s synergistic with the joystick for SOCD inputs, but if you like, you can assign the analog stick to RS (right stick) to control the camera in non-fighting games. Actually, there are several gate options to meet your analog stick needs.
With that being said…
It’s important to note that Raw Super Arcade isn’t a 10,000 employee company that’s listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Rather, it’s a small yet hardworking business that manufactures the Caster Portable’s case and joystick in-house. Not only that, wiring and soldering are done by hand.
Structurally, the Caster Portable is 3D printed from impact resistant ABS and includes other materials like copper— plus CNC and/or laser acrylic panels.
It’s awesome that the Caster Portable uses an RP2040 chip that runs on the open source GP2040 firmware, which we at The Arcade Stick are proponents of. In addition, the PCB features multiple outputs, and here’s a list of what’s preinstalled onto the board for your convenience:
- Joystick lever’s directional input pins
- Couple of side menu buttons
- Addressable RGB out
- OLED display
- Analog stick 1
- Analog stick 2
(About analog stick 2, an additional output is included for tinkerers to take advantage of today or in the future.)
Now, there’s a chance you’d like your Caster Portable to be compatible with additional modern consoles. Thankfully, you can insert your own adapter into a passthrough that extends the arcade stick’s compatibility options.
Visually, the Caster Portable is white with black pillars. It’s rectangular with a couple of round corners, and it’s got a lot of screws. The joystick’s color can add some spice to the aesthetics, and if you want, you can request a clear bat-top from Raw Super Arcade. The final boss is the RGB LED that can light up the buttons and top panel’s sides with flair.
At the time of reading this, you may or may not be able to get your hands on extra ABS parts in black—as well as clear front and rear panels. Otherwise, Raw Super Arcade announced color options for:
- Buttons
- Top panel
- Bottom panel
- Side panels
- Internals
In fact, those color options might be available right now, so be sure to check out Raw Super Arcade’s Etsy to see the latest stuff the Caster Portable may have to offer you—bringing you one step closer to becoming a world champion!
