Overview

Ever heard of New York? Concrete jungle where dreams are “made of”? There’s nothing you can’t do? These streets will make you feel brand new? Big lights will inspire you? Well, it seems that the NY-box was named after the city!

Made by Yuki Koubou (which means Snow Workshop), the NY-box ships internationally from Japan with the following parts:

  • Sanwa OBSF-24 buttons (12)
  • Sanwa OBSF-30 button
  • 12 mm function buttons (4)
  • Raspberry Pi Pico chip
  • Allen key

We at The Arcade Stick are fans of Sanwa’s durable buttons. That said, the NY-box was designed with Street Fighter 6 in mind, so its 13th button can be used for the Drive Impact or Drive Parry.

Not a Street Fighter 6 player? No problem, something you’ll find useful for other fighting games too is that the NY-box’s jump button is 6 mm bigger than the rest.

That size allows either thumb’s side to press the jump button more easily. Not only that, the NY-box has plenty of palm resting space. It’s also nice that this otherwise no-frills controller has four metal function buttons.

You know what else the NY-box has four of?

  • Four corner feet for stability
  • Four screws to hold the top panel in place

It’s for those very top panel screws that the NY-box comes with an Allen key. Otherwise, another important hardware component is the USB port on the left. This is an interesting location for sure.

(Yuki Koubou recommends a USB-A cable to go with the NY-box. Internally, there’s a USB-A to micro-B conversion, so there shouldn’t be a problem when using a USB-A cable.)

Connectivity-wise, the NY-box runs on the open source GP2040-CE firmware that’s acclaimed. It’s one of the main reasons that the controller has low latency.

Visually, the NY-box has a white top panel and black body. Furthermore, its attack buttons are white, whereas its directional buttons are black. This color scheme provides you enough nuance—while maintaining a sleekly minimalistic look.

That way, you can travel the world with the NY-box in style: winning tournaments here, winning tournaments there—especially due to the Sanwa buttons that have a travel distance so minimal that it results in easier combos and faster reactions.
