Introduction
Do you own a Powkiddy handheld device? Well, do you know that this company offers the A50 leverless controller too? It’s got some cool features that we’d love to talk to you about!
Unboxing
There’s not much else that comes with the A50 other than a USB-C cable and manual. Otherwise, it’s worth noting that your unit will likely come in a snug box, specifically in a plastic bag that’s inside a mailer.
Performance
In essence, the A50 is a 13 button controller with a dual layout, so it has an extra jump button you can press with your left middle finger—unlocking an optional WASD layout.
The A50’s buttons are supposed to last you 50 million presses, and they use blue axis switches that are hot swappable. With probably about 55 gf of actuation force, these switches are sharp, tactile, and clicky—though a bit slow. Otherwise, the five bigger-than-average function buttons are for:
- Home
- Touchpad
- Start
- Select
- Turbo
Hardware
The A50 is a smaller, light, and fairly slim “double shell” plastic controller with chamfered edges for your wrists’ comfort. You can also use its side grooves to set it on (or lift it up from) your desk.
In case you were wondering, the USB-C port is in the A50’s back left. At the bottom, you can see four silicone feet for stability—and six screws. You can also see the black PCB through a window in the center.
On top is where the A50’s screen is, and it can show your:
- Input mode
- Turbo mode
- Directional mode
- SOCD cleaning mode
- Button press animation
Appearance
The A50 has an interesting shade of white that borders on light gray. Even the USB-C cable has a matching white color to it. What’s more interesting is the controller’s slanted shape that’s reminiscent of a parallelogram, making you feel like you’re in geometry class again. It’s awesome that the controller has LED too, so the buttons can glow nicely.
Conclusion
While the A50’s plastic parts and overall generic feel aren’t much to write home about, it can be a good budget option to get started with leverless or WASD controllers. Another use case would be using this light controller when you travel.
