Introduction
He gave us the KeebFighter, he gave us the KeebBrawler, and now: he’s giving us the KeebWarrior. Will of Mavercade has been innovating for so long, and the innovations just don’t seem to stop.
No wonder Mavercade is a bestselling brand…
The KeebWarrior is one of the most unusual fighting game controllers out there. You can adjust this ergonomic controller so it perfectly fits your lap, making it a great option to take to tournaments or your buddy’s place.
Whether you’re looking to man-spread your way to diamond rank in Street Fighter or keep your legs super tight, the KeebWarrior has enough hinges for maximum flexibility, but the hinges are still robust—with no significant rattle.
Check this out: there are at least two editions of the KeebWarrior. One is the KeebWarrior-S3, and the other is the KeebWarrior-S4. Here is a quick breakdown of the two:
- The S3’s right module has 10 main buttons and 4 function buttons.
- The S4’s right module has 9 main buttons and 5 function buttons.
Both KeebWarrior editions’ right modules have five screws in them. That said, one way you can decide if the S3 or S4 is better suited for you is to ask yourself, “Do I like having a bigger button on the very right to press with my right pinky?” If so, consider the S4.
As for the modules on the left side, they can range from leverless buttons to WASD keys, but because the KeebWarrior is a modular controller, you’re not stuck with one style forever.
(In other words, you can order a KeebWarrior in the leverless layout today and change to a WASD layout next week if you want.)
Another benefit of the KeebWarrior’s modular design is not needing to spend so much on different controllers just to have access to leverless and WASD layouts etc.
Performance
The KeebWarrior uses Kailh Choc V2 switches. Not your preference? No problem, these switches are hot swappable without the need for tedious tools.
(It’s worth noting that Mavercade usually carries a bunch of different Kailh Choc V2 options, so if you like linear switches, you’re covered—and if you like tactile switches—you’re covered as well. Even a silent option is available.)
There are also rubber feet to keep your KeebWarrior in place while you play, especially for if you find yourself setting the controller on a desk.
What boosts the KeebWarrior’s performance further is the open source and highly popular GP2040-CE firmware. Not only that, the firmware:
- Is updatable & configurable online
- Has decent compatibility options
- Comes with almost zero lag
Needless to say, this firmware also features SOCD cleaning modes to keep your KeebWarrior tournament legal. In addition, you can extend the compatibility with more consoles by way of an adapter.
Hardware
Back to the KeebWarrior’s modules, they’re 3D printed, and the bottom plate is made of cold rolled steel that gives the controller some heft. As for the magnetic backing, it can be attached to phone holders for tilt play.
Another good decision Mavercade made with the KeebWarrior is the RJ45 network cable that connects the modules together. It’s durable and high speed.
Otherwise, the KeebWarrior mainly uses a USB-C connection, which is the fighting game community’s favorite. Also, the cable is braided, meaning it’s also durable.
Done with your KeebWarrior for the day? You can shut it almost as easily as you spread it out, and you can carry it with you back home easily.
Appearance
The KeebWarrior’s color customization is insane. You can choose the colors of the:
- Top plate
- Body
- Nylon keycaps
- Function buttons
You can even choose the KeebWarrior’s top plate texture, including carbon fiber “small” or carbon fiber “flakes”. Can you choose the switches’ color too?
Well, yeah, but switches’ colors usually indicate what kind of performance they have, so beware. For example, Kailh Choc V2 Reds are low profile, linear, smooth, soft, quiet, and fast.
Conclusion
The KeebWarrior combines ergonomics with flexibility in a way where someone as tall as an NBA player can enjoy it as much as the short king next door.
With that being said, there isn’t really anything on the market like the KeebWarrior at the time of its release, so if you buy this controller, you can take pride in being an early adopter. So, don’t waste one more second with an uncomfortable controller, and upgrade your game now!
