Introduction
You spoke, and Bishop|Select listened. When its Maestro controller first dropped, you were like, “Nah, I ain’t shelling out almost a thousand bucks for a controller…”
Well, you’re in luck—because the sequel controller, Opal, is now out, and it costs a fraction of its predecessor’s price—while giving you the same ergonomic goodness!
(Fun fact: “Opal” is a mineral that symbolizes things from hope to creativity.)
Performance
The Opal is the best of both worlds: it’s ergonomic without being completely unfamiliar to use. In other words, it isn’t shaped like Jabba the Hutt, and it doesn’t require you to rest your hands on their outer sides.
Instead, the Opal feels mostly like a standard leverless controller, but the top panel’s left side is sloped—and so is the right side. This way, you can say farewell to wrist pain—and game for hours past midnight.
You see, the Opal has Sanwa buttons that have an optimal travel distance, springiness, and crisp sound—plus durability. Not only that, you have four button layouts to choose from:

Hardware
The Opal is made of pinewood. The icing on the cake is the handle you can find on the right side, allowing you to easily carry the controller to the next tournament—and hopefully win it. You may also be delighted to know that the controller comes with a power cord and travel bag for free.
Connectivity-wise, the Opal runs on the acclaimed GP2040-CE open source firmware with benefits that include (1) almost zero input lag and (2) extendable compatibility if you have an appropriate dongle.
The GP2040-CE edition of the Opal should be compatible with the Nintendo Switch out of the box. For Xbox or PlayStation 5 compatibility though, you would need a dongle. Otherwise, you can grab a premium edition of this controller that runs on the PS5 without a dongle.
Appearance
While the Opal’s buttons are black, the wood itself has colors that are reminiscent of some camo you can unlock for Call of Duty guns once you level them up to a certain point—which is not a bad thing!
That aside, Bishop|Select allows you to pick a two color combo from these colors for your very own Opal:

- Purple
- Red
- Yellow
There might exist more colors by the time you read this article. Other than that, we did want to let you know that the Opal has high grade paint applied onto it—and with a polyurethane finish.
Full disclosure: Your Opal’s watercolor paint patterns and textures will probably vary from what you see in the pictures—because each controller is made uniquely (not worse nor better—just different).
Conclusion
The Opal is what you liked about the Maestro—but at a more affordable price. Yet, it gives you the same ergonomic goodness, which is ergonomic enough to improve your game without feeling completely alien.
