Introduction
Imagine owning a fantastic Haute42 controller that’s also wireless. This is what the W-P1 is all about. You can play up to 10 meters away from the wireless receiver and avoid eye strain. You can also play without a cable that may get tangled with your cat’s tail.
Unboxing
The W-P1’s box is black, purple, and simply elegant. We’ll do something different this time and mention the box’s contents with their colors—because you wouldn’t want a pink cable to go with your black controller or anything like that, right?

Performance
The W-P1’s 17 button layout is optimized for fighting game success in the modern day. Beyond the standard 12 button layout, you can press the five extra buttons with your:
- Left pinky
- Left middle finger
- Left thumb
- Right thumb
- Right index
Surprisingly, left pinky buttons still seem kind of rare in this day and age, so good job to Haute42 for including a left pinky button in the W-P1.
Not only that, the W-P1’s left middle-finger button unlocks a WASD layout you can use if your fighting game of choice has a free-roam component to it, for example. Don’t forget about the right index button as well.
Then, the W-P1 has left and right thumb buttons. Maybe you like mapping such thumb buttons to Drive Impact and Drive Rush as a Street Fighter 6 player.
Needless to say, the W-P1 is viable for other fighting games too. For instance, you may find yourself guzzling matcha to finish Marvel Tokon combo challenges. Coincidentally, this controller uses Shadow Matcha switches.
Following the success of Shadow Hunting switches, Haute42 debuted Shadow Matcha switches with the W-P1. These Kailh variants are made of POM, last 50 million actuations, and have these properties:
- Pre-travel: 0.8 ± 0.30 mm
- Total travel: 1.8 ± 0.3 mm
- Actuation force: 35 ± 10 gf
- Tactile force: 35 gf
- Return force: 15 gf min
No biggie if you dislike such switch properties because the Shadow Matchas are hot-swappable linear switches. Back to the button layout, the attack button cluster is in the popular Sega 2P layout, and the W-P1’s buttons in general are essentially spherical PBT keycaps that are 23.5 & 25.8 mm.
Now, if you read the unboxing section of our review, you may be wondering, “What in the world are HauteBlocks?” These are simply blank buttons you can install to reduce the W-P1’s button count from 17 to 16, 15, 14, or even 13 buttons if needed.

The W-P1’s start and back buttons have a bit of width to them for easier pressing, which is smart because these are buttons you’ll likely find yourself frequently pressing. But what about the toggles? Here’s the list:
- Off / 2.4 / USB / BT
- PC / PS / NS
- Unlock / lock
Basically, that last toggle is the W-P1’s tournament lock so you don’t press any of the five function buttons in the middle of a tournament match.
Other than that, you may have noticed that the W-P1’s wireless options include Bluetooth and 2.4G—the latter of which has a wireless receiver that’s big like a flash drive (instead of the small kind). Hey… At least it’s got a lid!
Moreover, the 2.4G wireless connection is low latency. We’re talking about 4,000 Hz polling and all that jazz. Further, the 3,600 mAh battery can last you 12+ hours before needing to recharge the W-P1.
Hardware
At a size a bit bigger than A4, the light W-P1 is a spacious, sloped, and slim controller—so you can:
- Rest it on your legs.
- Rest your palms on its slope.
- Slide it into a laptop sleeve when you’re done.
You see, the W-P1 is made of some of the finest plastics known to our galaxy: polycarbonate and ABS. There’s also a large anti-slip silicone pad down yonder with some stylistic lines on it.
Something else you can enjoy is the W-P1’s colored swipe-style touchscreen that lets you see important details that are conducive to your fighting game success, such as the four SOCD cleaning modes.
Most importantly, the W-P1 has an optional wireless connection. Yet, if you want to play wired, there are USB-C ports in the back and on the left. Here are some recommendations:
- Use the back USB-C port for its secure lock.
- Use the left USB-C port to plug in quickly.
Meanwhile, a USB-A port is on the right. You can use a USB-A dongle like the BOOTER 5 to make the W-P1 compatible with additional modern consoles like the PlayStation 5, but note that PS5 and Xbox compatibility don’t work wirelessly with this controller.

Even the W-P1’s screen has some aesthetic settings, such as:
