Introduction
Punk Workshop is a brand that has been around for years, making itself a household name in the fightstick industry. The Punk Workshop R14, otherwise known as the PWS R14, is a redesign of this fine establishment’s previous controllers that are beloved in the community: the Leverless M and Leverless U.
Unboxing
Your R14 should arrive in a black Punk Workshop box with black foam housing and slots for the following freebies:
- Six spare TTC microswitches
- Two adhesive anti-slip pads
- Two textured USB-C cables
- Plastic removal tool
- Flathead screwdriver
- Punk Workshop sleeve
The R14’s sleeve also has an external zipper to store accessories, and its carrying handle allows you to walk around with it like it’s a briefcase. Needless to say, this controller comes with a manual too.
Performance
The R14 uses PWS Blaze Spark buttons with 45 cN of actuation force and 0.5 mm of total travel. In other words, these clicky yet delicate buttons are fast.
In this day and age, you don’t want to be the only one at a tournament with just a dozen buttons on your leverless controller. Instead, you are a future-oriented fighting gamer. This is where the R14’s name comes in.
Part of the R14’s name has to do with its 14 buttons. Essentially, there are two extra buttons surrounding the jump button for L3 and R3. These buttons are good for—but not limited to—games like Street Fighter 6 and its Drive Parry/Impact mechanics.
Not only that, eight function buttons can be found in the R14’s back. Namely, there are four function buttons in the back left—and four more in the back right.
That function button placement should make both left and right handed players happy. Which hand is your more dominant one, by the way? Anyway, such placement is rare to see, so you’re getting something unique with the R14.
The story doesn’t end here, though… The R14 is actually endorsed by Japanese pro players Gachikun and Shuto! Specifically, the Gachikun edition also has 14 buttons, whereas the Shuto edition has 15 buttons.
Gachikun likes having the three thumb button cluster a bit skewed to the left. He also likes the jump button to be bigger than the rest. As for Shuto, he likes a whopping four thumb buttons:
- One button is dedicated to the left thumb.
- Another button is for the right thumb.
- Two center buttons are for either thumb.
That said, as hardcore fighting gamers, we’ve probably all suffered from aches and pains after marathon gaming sessions. For one, the R14 is wide enough for comfortable lap play.
More than that, the R14 has a 3.2° ergonomic slope. It’s slim and easy to carry—as you win trophies with it worldwide. However, there’s a chance you might want to pop open the controller for maintenance or button swapping…
Hardware
Luckily, the R14 brings back Punk Workshop’s magnetic opening design. Unlike other controllers with a dated design, you don’t need any tedious tools or much time spent to pop open this controller, saving you effort and time. It might even save you money—not having to buy a screwdriver and all.
Specifically, you can pop open the R14 through one of its bottom side grooves. Stick the plastic removal tool into a groove, and prop up the bottom panel. Then, you can uncover the organized wiring.
Once you’re inside the R14, you’ll probably notice either:
- PKB2040 chip with Punk Workshop’s firmware optimized for PC
- Brook Gen-5X board with multiplatform compatibility (and as good as zero lag)
In any case, you should be able to insert a converter to make the R14 compatible with more consoles than when you first bought it. Otherwise, a USB-C port is conveniently located in the center back.
Appearance
The R14 looks as pleasantly minimalistic as other Punk Workshop controllers, but it can also come with preset artworks representing Gachikun and Shuto.
Now, if you’d like totally custom art for the R14, please feel free to reach out to us here at The Arcade Stick for our bestselling artwork service.
Other than that, the R14’s sleeve is fittingly black, its cable is black too, even the internal wiring is black, and the effective anti-slip pads are gray in a way that still matches the vibe.
Conclusion
With or without art, the R14 is a beauty, and when you factor in how it has more than a dozen buttons (that are Punk Workshop’s own), you may end up snatching tournament gold—in style.
Just imagine the flashing lights as the paparazzi take your picture with the R14 and a first place plaque! At this point, Punk Workshop awaits your click.
