Introduction
Alpenmeister doesn’t only specialize in mini controllers, and the proof is the Meisterbox L. This 14 button controller features a split layout that has been picking up in popularity, but the layout you see has Alpenmeister’s own twist.
Bert, the gentleman behind Alpenmeister, is a Street Fighter player. While the Meisterbox L was designed with Street Fighter in mind, it can be a viable option for other fighting games too.
Unboxing
Your brand new Meisterbox L should arrive with the following items:
- USB-C to A cable
- Alternate panels
- Hole plug (for alternate layouts)
That said, let’s move on to the Meisterbox L’s performance.
Performance
We are fond of the Meisterbox L’s injection molded, semi-transparent spiral keycaps that are 25.3 mm in diameter. More about these keycaps:
- Reminiscent of 30 mm arcade buttons
- Have an MX compatible stem
- Quieter than average
Moving on, the Meisterbox L’s button layout may require some time getting used to it, but the reward should be worth it, securing you more wins in-game. As for the function buttons, there are four of them.
Regarding the Meisterbox L’s switches, they are the smooth yet fast Lofree x Kailh Ghosts. If they’re not your type, it’s great that they’re hot swappable with other switches (assuming they can fit Kailh Choc V2 sockets).
Truth be told, the Meisterbox L is quite slim and light. This makes the controller one of the most portable out there—despite having a generous size.
That same size also makes the Meisterbox L suitable for both lap and desk play. Needless to say, there is plenty of space to rest your wrists.
Hardware
Essentially, the Meisterbox L’s build features a combination of acrylic, plastic, and neoprene. To be specific, the top is acrylic, the enclosure is made of durable PETG plastic, and the effective anti-slip layer at the bottom is neoprene.
In the Meisterbox L’s center back, you will find the USB-C port tucked in neatly. This is where the USB-C cable can go. To describe the cable in further detail:
- It’s right-angled.
- It’s braided.
- It’s black.
Nearby is a USB-C port where you can insert a USB-C to A converter and then a USB-A dongle to make the Meisterbox L compatible with more consoles. This is made possible due to the GP2040-CE firmware, which is almost lag-free and quite awesome. Now, the main way the controller stands out is its modular design. Speaking of which…
Appearance
There are colorful covers with different layouts available. You can follow the three step process below to make use of the Meisterbox L’s modularity:
- Swap out the cover to the one you prefer.
- Change the buttons’ positions.
- Switch your software’s profile.
You can even get custom art for the Meisterbox L, which we at The Arcade Stick can help you with through our service. Another way you can make your brand new controller more beautiful is through the bottom RGB LED.

The Meisterbox L may be the reason you get better at fighting games without doing anything new other than grabbing a unit of this controller!
