Introduction

Does it rustle your jimmies that a lot of fightsticks use 30 mm buttons? Maybe you have smaller hands and prefer smaller buttons. You might even have bigger hands—yet prefer smaller buttons to minimize finger movement.

Less finger movement means faster reaction times, and faster reaction times mean winning more matches. This is where the RAT-01 comes in.

Unboxing

Your RAT-01 can arrive in DIY format or preassembled. If you want it preassembled, you get an arcade controller set and LED remote control. If you want it in DIY format (which will be the focus of this article), you get:

  • RAT-01 enclosure
  • Base mount set
  • USB mount
  • OLED display
  • LED system
  • LED remote control

Performance

The RAT-01 has a generic joystick and 11 generic buttons, excluding the two function buttons on the right side. You may be able to consider the joystick and buttons as Sanwa-like but not as good. In other words, you may find the joystick to feel looser than what you’re used to, and the buttons might feel clunky.

On a more positive note, the RAT-01 is one of those rare fightsticks that have an OLED display. Usually, leverless controllers are the ones with such a display.

Not only that, the RAT-01 uses a Raspberry Pi Pico H chip with soldered headers and a three-pin debug connector. Additionally, there’s a slope for your palms or wrists. Finally, there are rubber feet to keep the fightstick stable.

Hardware

The RAT-01 is light, which makes carrying it easy. Carriage is even easier with the handle you can use to carry the fightstick, which—by the way—features a USB-C port (found on the right side).

As for the CR2025 battery, you’d have to buy it yourself. It’s also worth noting that the RAT-01’s cramped interior may require advanced DIY skills from you to wire it up neatly.

Appearance

Due to 3D printing, there may be fine scratches on your RAT-01, and you might even experience some warping. On the bright side, you can turn on the LED by way of a remote.

For example, you can choose your favorite LED color, and light can shine through the clear button rims & sides. Otherwise, the RAT-01 is mainly black—except for the white function buttons and the USB port’s silver rim.

Conclusion

Consider the RAT-01 if you need a 24 mm button fightstick with 11 primary buttons for modern fighting games, especially if you like carrying a fightstick by the handle. If you fancy this fightstick enough—but don’t live in Japan—you can use a proxy service to deliver it to your country.
