Introduction

Lauren, the mastermind behind Clean Sweep Arcade, owned many fightsticks from mainstream to boutique manufacturers. With support from known community members like jonyfraze and Mr. Arcade Fox, she ended up coming up with the Familiar, which is a DIY enclosure.

Unboxing

Clean Sweep Arcade makes life easier for you by including all of these items with your Familiar order:

  • USB-A to C Neutrik adapter
  • Internal and external USB-A or C cables
  • Pre-wired 12 mm metallic function buttons (6)
  • Non-slip rubber pad (12″ x 8″)
  • Detachable magnetic bottom
  • Detachable nylon strap
  • Side cutouts for easy lifting
  • All assembly hardware

(If you want, you can get Clean Sweep’s Cauldron buttons instead of Sunmulon buttons. This way, you get to save money, but you still get to enjoy concave buttons with your Familiar that should fit any microswitch similar to the included Cherry/ZF D44X. Upon your request, a 35 mm Korean lever hole is also possible.)

Performance

Alright, so you can tell Clean Sweep Arcade your desired button layout, but if you don’t, the default button layout you’ll receive will have the maximum number of buttonholes. Other than that, let’s dive into the Familiar’s preset button layouts.

For starters…

The Familiar’s first button layout can accommodate a lever and up to 11 main buttons sized 24 mm. Plus, there are two internal 24 mm storage spots.

Meanwhile…

The Familiar’s second button layout can also handle a lever and up to 11 main buttons, but they’re sized 30 mm, and so are the two internal storage spots.

Then…

You have the Familiar’s third button layout, which is leverless, supports up to 12 main buttons of 24 & 30 mm sizes, and has two internal 24 & 30 mm storage spots.

Finally…

We have the Familiar’s fourth button layout, which is split leverless, compatible with up to 13 main buttons of a 24 mm size, and the couple of internal storage spots are 24 mm too.

Hardware

The fact of the matter is that the Familiar is 3D printed from PETG and has a 1/8″ acrylic panel on top. As for the inner clearance, it’s 2.13″. Just note that PETG can warp at high temperatures, so don’t leave your enclosure out in the sun or anything like that.

Appearance

You can tell Clean Sweep Arcade which color you’d like your Familiar to be, but if you don’t, you’ll either receive a black or white enclosure, which isn’t a bad deal.

Now, something that’s almost impossible to avoid with 3D printing is minor imperfections, which your Familiar may have. However, Lauren from Clean Sweep Arcade tries her best to avoid those.

Conclusion

The Familiar is for the fightstick aficionado who takes pride in assembling a DIY enclosure that can have the button layout that he or she finds conducive to excellent fighting game performance. Moreover, design elements like the detachable magnetic bottom can make future maintenance easier for you.
