In December 2016, Hori released an arcade stick for the PlayStation 4. It seemingly rehashed that arcade stick with PlayStation 5 compatibility and R-Type Final 2 artwork to develop the Hori R-Type Final 2. R-Type Final 2 is the latest installment of the horizontal scrolling shooter series. Honestly, the arcade stick seems overkill for such a simple game, so Hori’s motive was probably the revenue from the collaboration, but that should not deter fighting game fans from copping this piece.

The price seems to be slightly higher than the original unit, which makes sense because of the new artwork and, more importantly, being designed specifically for the PS5. Plus, it is made to order. Otherwise, it seems that the features are completely identical to the original, the Hori Real Arcade Pro V Hayabusa.

Hori veterans should feel familiar with the parts of this arcade stick. They are high quality, although the joystick is looser than average, which may be your thing. The buttons are responsive and should appeal to the majority. The pads in the base make the arcade stick comfortable on your lap or a table.

This is an accurate steel-base arcade replica. Although similar in design to other Hori products, this unit features the original flat design, which is hit or miss depending on your taste. That is because many prefer a slope on a case to rest their wrists. On the brighter side, the more common Vewlix layout was brought back for the buttons instead of Hori’s own layout. However, an earphone jack was omitted. Thankfully, the arcade stick is relatively easy to mod.

The nod to R-Type Final 2 is loud and clear, thanks to the artwork and menacingly large text. In fact, the text may be too large for your tastes. Otherwise, the familiar silhouette remains good looking, but Hori veterans will likely feel that it is time for a change.

The performance is reliable, and the layout is comfy, but the flatness and absence of an earphone jack are questionable.

  • Reliable performance
  • Comfortable layout
