Overview
You know how we sometimes say that a controller has a mirrored layout? In the Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad’s case, the layout is literally mirrored! So, both right-handed and left-handed players should feel welcome when using it.
You see, the Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad has 10 keys on the left and 10 more on the right. Each set of 10 keys is divided into three rows of four keys, four more keys, and two keys.
The keys have an ergonomic slant to them for your wrists’ comfort. You can even use the Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad controller as a WASD controller, which is like you buying a 2-in-1 controller for the price of just one.
The Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad uses the tried and tested brand, Kailh, for its switches. Namely, the controller uses Kailh Choc V1 White switches for minimum travel distance, leading to speed and responsivity.
If you pop open your Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad, you should find a RP2040-Zero chip that runs on the open source and acclaimed GP2040-CE firmware. This firmware is updateable online and has almost zero input delay. The chip itself allows you to reassign inputs to any key.
(You just need a small Philips-head screwdriver for that kind of customization.)
If you want, you can request Chris from CREEation Design to preprogram the keys for you. By the way, you can use a third party adapter to extend the Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad’s compatibility options with more consoles.
As for the Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad’s PCB itself, it’s a modified Chouchou board. It’s modified to improve the microcontroller’s undermounting, resulting in a sleeker outside shell. You can conveniently find the setup guide online. On a closing note about connectivity, the controller uses the community favorite USB-C.
Moving on, there are many cool ways to try describing the Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad’s unique shape, such as:
- Asymmetric rounded trapezoid
- Flattened ellipse
- Convex lens
For all practicality purposes though, let’s just call the Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad’s shape a triangle with round corners. Also, only five screws hold the controller together, and it’s small enough for you to easily carry from tournament to tournament.
That said, your brand new Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad can be made of:
- Red oak with a Danish oil finish
- MDF with no finish
MDF with no finish? Why?
That’s actually a blessing in disguise—because it makes customizing the Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad easier for you. Plus, MDF saves you money, and it’s also durable.
Anyway, due to the material’s nature, your Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad may have a different grain pattern than the one shown on Etsy—where CREEation Design has an impressive track record.
CREEation Design can actually entertain any other wood options you may want your Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad to be made out of and shipped from the workshop in Reston, Virginia. On a side note, CREEation Design made a good choice of including keycaps in black—a color that complements both red oak and MDF.
So, whether you’re a right-handed or left-handed player, the Handcrafted Wooden Fightpad is an interesting option with which you can easily travel around—without worrying about baggage weight limits. Another option is to gift this controller to your left-handed friend. The choice is yours!
